5 Signs You May Be Ready for a Mobility Scooter

5 Signs You May Be Ready for a Mobility Scooter

There comes a time in everyone’s life when moving around becomes more difficult. Maybe you’re dealing with chronic pain from an injury or a condition like arthritis. Maybe something like COPD makes it difficult to be as active as you once were. Whatever your situation, it’s frustrating when your body makes it hard for you to enjoy the activities you once loved. Small lifestyle changes can help you regain control over your life and make the most of your golden years.

One potential change is investing in a mobility scooter. If you’re considering this, but aren’t sure if it’s the right move for you, we can help. Here are five signs it may be time for a travel scooter, and how to choose the right one for your lifestyle.

How Do I Choose The Best Scooter For Me?

Shopping for a scooter can feel overwhelming at times.  There are so many options out there, so many websites and so many advertisements. How do you choose the right one?  How do you know you are getting the best deal? How do you know who to trust? Do I need accessories? Will it arrive fully assembled?  What if I get it and I don’t like it and want to return it.

We here at  Go Mobility Online get asked these questions every day and we want to help you address your concerns.  Therefore, we thought it would help if we created a guide to help you choose the best scooter for your needs and we hope this guide will assist you in finding the perfect scooter.

The first thing you will want to decide is what category of scooter you will need.  Do you want something portable that you can take in and out of a car very easily? Or do you want something that’s extremely heavy-duty that will get you over any obstacle that may come your way?  Or maybe you need a scooter that does it all, portable and heavy-duty.  Of course, if you need assistance in figuring out the best category of scooters you can always call us here at Go Mobility Online at 866-230-2323 x2 and go over this in detail with one of our dedicated staff. But here we breakdown the most popular categories to help you make an educated decision.

Folding Scooters - The most popular scooter category right now is Folding Scooters.  Folding Scooters allow one to easily get their scooter in and out of the car.  They are the best option for airline travel, cruise ships, taking the bus, or just going to the mall. Folding scooters are great because there is no need for an expensive lift for your car, no ramps needed and they provide independence as most people can transport a Folding Scooter all by themselves.  If you are looking for something portable, easy to get in and out of a car, and that will give you the independence to get yourself where you need to, when you want to go, then Folding Scooters are where you should look first.

Heavy Duty Scooters - Looking to go long distances, get over rough terrain, and have fun while your cruising all over town without worrying about how much battery charge left, then a Heavy Duty Scooter is the best option for you.  Heavy Duty Scooters have a higher weight capacity, the biggest tires to go over rough terrain, and have the best suspension so you have the smoothest ride while conquering most terrain.  There are Heavy Duty scooters that go up to 40 miles on a single charge and can go as fast as 18 MPH. We normally recommend a Heavy Duty Scooter for someone that will need their scooter to be tough, that will be using it for long periods of time on a single charge, and that does not need their scooter to portable.  These scooters a bigger, but can be still be used to go into stores and malls, but they are not meant to be used for traveling on a bus or airplane.  There are some great options in the Heavy Duty category.  If you need help deciding which is the best one for you, please give us a call at 866-230-2323 x2.

Do you want a 3 or 4 Wheel Scooter? 3 and 4 Wheel Scooters are a great option for people that want their scooter to do a little bit of everything.  Some can still be portable, some can still handle rough terrain and some can still be used indoors and outdoors.  They are bigger than Travel and Folding Scooters but not quite as big as the Heavy Duty Scooters. Generally speaking, if you want a scooter that has the best turning radius you will want to look at the 3 Wheel Mid Size Scooter but if you would prefer the most stable option you will want a 4 Wheel Scooter.  There are some new 4 Wheel options that do have an amazing turning radius like the  Luggie Elite Plus 4  and the Pride Zero Turn.

Recreational Scooters - If you will be mostly going over paved roads, you want to go fast and travel extremely far on a single charge and look good while you are doing it then a Recreational Scooter might be the right choice for you.  There are some very fun scooters in this niche, they come in a ton of fun colors and there are some great bargains to be found as well.  You can get a scooter that goes about 50 miles per charge, 20 MPH, has blue tooth speakers, storage and an alarm for a great price here.  If you're looking for value there are some great scooters to be found in the Recreational Scooter category.

Once you decide what category of scooter you will need, there are some features that you will want to make sure to meet your needs.

You can view all the features of every scooter at Go Mobility Online by viewing the Specs tab on every product page on our site. We also recommend watching the videos we have on our site and reading all the reviews.  That will help you in determining the best scooter for your needs.

The first thing you will want to look at is Weight Capacity. Weight capacity is how much weight a scooter can hold.  That does not mean the scooter weighs that much.  For example, we have scooters that weigh about 40 pounds but can accommodate a person that weighs up to 300 pounds.  Most scooters these days will have a minimum weight capacity up to 250 pounds and we have ones that can be used by someone that weighs over 500 pounds.

Some other features that you may want to consider are how fast a scooter goes and how long the scooter will go on a single charge. When looking at speed and distance some things to consider are the lighter you are, the farther you will go, the faster you will go and the better hill climbing ability you will have.  A lot of people are concerned that they won’t be able to keep up with people walking but most scooters have a minimum speed of about 5 miles per hour and that will be fast enough to keep up with anyone walking at a normal pace.  We do have scooters that will go up to 20 Miles Per Hour and can go almost 50 miles on a single charge.  So if you want to go fast and to go far we got you covered.

If you are looking to travel long distances, go fast and look good while you are doing it you should look at our Recreational Scooters. There are some very fun scooters in this category at great prices.  A lot of value can be found here.

Most modern scooters will also provide you enough distance to go all day, and if you choose a scooter with a Lithium Battery you can just plug it in like your cell phone, give it a quick charge when you stop for a cup of coffee or lunch, and you will be good to go all day because Lithium Batteries charge so fast and can be charged anywhere. This makes Lithium Batteries a great choice if you want to spend the whole day at DisneyLand, go for an all-day adventure from a Cruise Ship, or just want to leave your hotel at 8 in the morning and go exploring all day.

That brings up another important decision to make.  What type of battery to get?  Most Heavy Duty Scooters will have what is called a Lead Acid Battery but if you choose a Folding Scooter you will need to choose if a Lithium Battery or a Lead Acid Battery is better for you.  We always recommend a Lithium Battery for Folding Scooters because they are lighter, smaller and they charge so fast. They also last a really long time, so they are quite cost-effective and you really get a return on your investment.
